SSHSA 2010 Awards

C. Bradford Mitchell Award is bestowed upon an individual, institution or agency in recognition of a single achievement, such as an important book, or founding of an institution contributing to the goals, objectives and mission of the Steamship Historical Society of America.

2010 C. Bradford Mitchell Award

Awarded to Christopher Winters in recognition for his publication entitled, "Centennial: Steaming Through the American Century," which documents and chronicles in full-color the amazing vessel SS St. Mary's Challenger. In April 2006, the iconic St. Mary's Challenger freighter became the first Great Lakes ship to reach 100 years of age while still in operational service. Marine photographer Chris Winters spent five seasons creating Centennial, a vivid record of life aboard this most extraordinary of ordinary ships.

Samuel Ward Stanton Award for Lifetime Achievement recognizes the accumulated value of on-going work in our areas of concern.

The 2010 award was presented to Frank P. Manwell in grateful recognition of more than 50 years of volunteering with the Steamship Historical Society of America, including significant contributions to recording and preserving the legacy of the United States Merchant Marine, with an emphasis on showcasing the shipping and maritime activities of the Southeast and Gulf coasts. Mr. Manwell began writing as a columnist for SSHSA's "Steamboat Bill" in 1960.

H. Graham Wood Award for Distinguished Service to SSHSA recognizes an individual for their long-time dedication and service to the Steamship Historical Society of America.

The 2010 award was presented to Francis J. Duffy in grateful recognition of his long and productive association with the Steamship Historical Society of America and for contributions to the maritime industry, with particular emphasis on efforts to record and preserve the legacy of ships, New York shipping and the United States Merchant Marine.
